Spring Is everyone’s favorite time of year – warm days, flowers and buds bursting open, daylight still when we get off work. Chinese medicine teaches us that our bodies also participate in this event. Spring is the time of the Wood element. In Chinese theory Wood rules the tendons and ligaments of the body. Hip flexor strains are common this time of year as the tendons in this region become more vulnerable. The Wood element is also associated with headaches and often migraine patterns become moree intense in the spring. Spring allergies also can add to headaches, in addition to the usual sneezing and itching. The wood element is associated with wind, and we must take extra precaution to cover our necks and upper backs, as these area are especially vulnerable to spring wind, which can transport diseases through this region.
We tell our patients that even if they are healthy they should get a tuneup during seasonal changes, as the body is more vulnerable at these times. A spring tuneup will keep you healthy during these windy months as winter and spring tussle. Prevention is always better than having to address an issue once it starts.
